Secondary Phase Music

Our music curriculum aims for all pupils to fully participate in high-quality  Listening, Composing and Performing activities.  Pupils will develop an enthusiasm for, and love of, music-making which will inspire them within, and beyond, the curriculum to search out further musical opportunities at school and throughout their future lives. Our scheme of work and curriculum enrichment activities aim to develop our Trinity Characteristics and encourage all our pupils to “Live life in all its fullness” (John 10:10).

At Key Stage 3 (years 7-8)  pupils have a weekly lesson building on their primary experience: singing and playing a variety of instruments; creating their own music, including with technology;  and listening to a wide variety of music  across time, place, culture and genre.

In years 9 – 11 Music is optional and divided into two pathways.  Within GCSE Edexcel Music (three lessons per week) pupils further develop solo, and ensemble performing skills. They compose, including with music technology manipulating the musical elements with more sophistication and they analyse a wide variety of set works. The second pathway: NCFE Music Technology Levels 1/2 receives a double lesson each week. Pupils develop research, sound creation, music software, hardware, editing and evaluation skills. Additionally in year 9 all pupils who express an interest are offered the opportunity for fully-funded instrumental lessons.

Extensive music-making outside of the curriculum includes: weekly choir and band rehearsals; termly school concerts; special assemblies; celebrations; community visits for example, Glebe Care home; participation in a Lewisham festival and an annual production. We produce a number of joint primary/secondary events including a Lewisham singing festival, and a transition Carol service.

Instrumental tuition is supplied by visiting teachers on: drumkit; piano; strings; brass; woodwind; and guitar/bass guitar.

My time at Trinity by Honey Hill and LSO On Track Concert

" I have really enjoyed my time at Trinity because it offered new experiences in music with groups like concert band, which helped me to improve my confidence because of getting used to performing in front of people and it also made me enjoy performing more. Performing with the London Symphony Orchestra, in preparation for the BMW Classics Series at Trafalgar Square in June this year, was an amazing experience because it gave me the opportunity to meet more young musicians as well as working with and playing alongside professional musicians from the LSO. During our rehearsals for this concert I got to meet and talk to the composer of the piece we played, which was really inspiring and we also got to work with the very famous conductor Sir Simon Rattle. The audience for the concert was absolutely huge – I felt really nervous but I really enjoyed it. I have really enjoyed particular subjects at school such as History, English, Citizenship and Music. One of the most memorable times for me was seeing ‘Wicked’ the musical with school. I will miss my teachers and my friends at Trinity but have good memories to take with me to sixth form where I want to carry on with my favourite subjects at A level."
